Ed Vickerman, 26, Leader of the Thorner Cub Group in Wetherby District has won The SSAT Award for Outstanding New Teacher of the Year at the 2009 Teaching Awards. Ed collected his award, along with the winners in the 11 other available categories, in front of a 2000-strong audience, including pupils, parents and colleagues at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London on 25th October. The ceremony was hosted by celebrity presenters Christine Bleakley and Jeremy Vine and screened on BBC2 at 6pm.
Ed has been a teacher for three years. He started his career at Sherburn High school in North Yorkshire and after 18 months was appointed Head of Business at the Freeston Business and Enterprise College , in Wakefield . It was the seventh most improved school in the country last year and has gained the status as the National Enterprise Research School .
Ed Vickerman, said:
“I am thrilled to have won such an amazing award. I knew that I wanted to teach after I became a Cub Scout Leader. Being Akela and working with 30 young people each week taught me I could motivate and enthuse young people and make a real difference to young people. I wanted to continue with this which is why I became a teacher. Many of the leadership skills I have I learned through Scouting. Being responsible for a small group of people in Scouting is very similar to leading a small group of people at work.” He added “I am honoured and really excited to win this award as I love being a teacher. Appointing me as Director of business and enterprise was very forward-thinking of the school..”
The Teaching Awards were founded by Lord Puttnam CBE in 1998 to focus on inspired professionals who make the positive achievements of pupils possible. Following the tenth anniversary celebrations in 2008, Will Wyatt CBE, former deputy director general of the BBC became the new chairman of the Teaching Awards Trust and Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson has accepted the role of president.
