Chelmsford Scouts support school in Nepal
27/08/2009

Thirty four Explorer Scouts and ten Leaders from Chelmsford and District have returned home from a three week trip of a lifetime to Nepal.
After twenty four hours of travelling, the first day was spent sightseeing and soaking up the atmosphere around Kathmandu, a culture shock for many.
The group then moved north west to Pokhara which itself turned into an adventure when a landslide closed the only road for four hours.
Unfortunately, original plans for the trek had to change as the weather was not good enough to fly up into the mountains, but this didn't dampen the group's enthusiasm as they set of on an alternative route into the Annapurna area of the Himalayas.
Highlights of the nine day trek included amazing scenery, walking through rainforests, complete with leeches, and an early morning hike to watch the sun rise over Poon Hill, with a breathtaking view of the Annapurna range. This was followed by a two day rafting expedition along the Seti River, with an overnight camping stop on the river bank.
Finally it was back to Kathmandu to repay the kindness of the Nepalese people by carrying out a community project at a local primary school for children aged three to six, which is run entirely through donations.
This involved preparing and decorating some of the classrooms, including producing individual murals in some rooms, and sprucing up external areas of the school.
There was also the opportunity to interact with the school children, including teaching them action songs and games and showing them how to use the play equipment brought from England.
On the last day in Nepal the finished classrooms were unveiled to the children and their grateful teachers, an experience which everyone will remember for a long time to come.
It is hoped that Chelmsford and District Explorer Scouts will be able to continue to support work at the school by raising money to sponsor children so they can continue their education.

By Darren Bretton (ACC International Essex) on 03/09/2009 16:49 It is with a great sense of pride that I read the article and comments on the recent Trip by members of Essex Scouting. It not only shows that as Scouts we have it within our gift to change the lives of the young people in our charge by arranging such adventurous and exciting trips, but also how our young people have it within their own power to change the lives of others around the World. This is an inspiration, and one that I hope will cause others to stop, think and then do. Well done Chelmsford

By Sue Wilde, D.C. Chelmsford on 07/09/2009 11:26 Needless to say I am extremely proud of what these young people and leaders have achieved. The planning started a couple of years ago and so much time has been given to fundraising and team building. Don't let's forget that the leaders have also given up 3 weeks of annual leave from their day jobs and 3 weeks away from their own families.
The memories will live on forever, I have no doubts about that having seen some of the thousands of photographs.
I will certainly be encouraging more support for this area from the District in the future.
I hope others will get inspired - you'd be amazed at what your young people are capable of.
