Scouts wing it at Windsor
05/08/2009
Scouts from 40 countries around the world have descended on Windsor Great Park for an action packed week camping in the Queen’s back garden.
They have joined over 6000 other Scouts and Guides at Wings International Jamboree held in Windsor, UK.
Making a difference is the theme of the international camp being held in Windsor Great Park and participants take part in local community projects to make a contribution back to their host community.
One of the key parts of the week’s programme is for participants to explore the Global Development Village where they can find out more about other countries, as well as what they can do to make their own a better place.
‘I love Jamborees...’
Joe Rathbourne an Explorer Scout from County Meath, Ireland said ‘I love Jamborees, seeing all these people in this one place is amazing. I can’t wait to try out all the many activities.’
Sarah Giles, a Girl Guide from Norfolk said, ‘Being at Wings is a massive achievement and worth all the fundraising we have done over the last year. The challenge of raising enough money for the whole Unit to attend was a mammoth effort.’
During the week the Guides and Scouts will be provided with 20,000 pints of milk, 8,000 loaves of bread, 9,600 toilet rolls, 80,000 biscuits, 60,000 hot drinks, 183 toilets, 6,000 black bin liners and 4,000 recycling bags.
Wings2009 has made significant steps to reduce the environmental impact of the event. Paper used on site is sourced from Yo Yo Paper, leaders in the recyclable industry, and not only is recycled but is sourced from FSC sustainable sources. Partnerships with the local council (RBWM) will also significantly increase the amount of waste recycled.
