AxeJam - Julia Kattana (photo competition winner September 2008)

Congratulations to Julia Kattana of Axe District Scout Fellowship who sent in the winning photo:

Axe District Fellowship was asked to provide some bases at the District's AxeJam weekend in May 2008. As we had no idea of numbers as the hundreds of young people could choose which activities they wished to do on the day, added to the fact we were asked to keep the cost to a minimum, we hit on the idea of

"RECOVER - RECYCLE - RE-USE"

We ran bases making "Tracking Boards" from cartons, stones, sticks etc. "Bangers" from magazines and cereal packets. "Knotting Boards" from carton & string and "Gift Bags" made from glossy magazines, playing cards, glue & string. The photo shows a group of Beaver Scouts with their bags, which they were able to use to carry home other articles they'd made.

We did have to buy sellotape & string (although we did try to re-use some bits we'd collected. We also tried to make larger bags from wallpaper, but the young people found the smaller bags easier to make.

Overall these bases cost us about £8, and we probably had around 150 visitors to each base during one day. The visitors were mostly Beavers & Cub Scouts, although some Scouts and quite a few Leaders visited us too.
