Scouting’s UK leadership partnership - Q&As

What does the Chief Scout do?
The Chief Scout provides inspirational leadership to the Scout Movement in the UK. He is the public face of Scouting and ensures that it reaches as wide an audience as possible.

How was the Chief Scout chosen?
There was a full search process and the role with the role being advertised in the national press (The Sunday Times) and online; it was open to all. Applications were received and reviewed by a Search Group appointed by The Committee of the Council of The Scout Association.

This process was completed when a formal Ordinary General Meeting of the Council of The Scout Association took place on 17 May this year. At the meeting, the new Chief Scout was approved by the Council.  A formal handover from current Chief Scout, Peter Duncan to Bear Grylls will take place at a date in July 2009.

How long will Bear Grylls be Chief Scout?
The appointment is a five-year tenure, so until 2014.

What does the UK Chief Commissioner do?
Wayne Bulpitt’s responsibility is to lead and manage all volunteers within Scouting and in particular the team of Chief Commissioners, UK Commissioners and the International Commissioner. He is also responsible for managing some external relationships including engagement with political parties, our Scouting Ambassadors and other organisations.

Is either post a paid position?
No, both are voluntary.

When does Peter Duncan finish being Chief Scout?
The official handover will take place in summer 2009, and until then Peter Duncan will continue his role as the UK Scout Association’s ninth Chief Scout (2004-2009).

Is Wayne the Deputy Chief Scout?
No, as UK Chief Commissioner Wayne will not be fulfilling similar duties to the Chief Scout; instead, he will be focusing on directly supporting leaders within the Movement.

You can email Wayne at ukcc@scout.org.uk

How can I contact the new Chief Scout
